📍 Japan
The Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum brings two institutions together in Omoromachi, part of Naha’s Shintoshin district. The museum explores the islands’ natural environment, archaeology and cultural history, including the Ryukyu Kingdom, while the art museum presents modern and contemporary work with a strong focus on artists connected to Okinawa. The complex’s pale, fortress-like architecture draws inspiration from gusuku, the castles of the Ryukyu Islands. Sloping walls, geometric openings and deeply recessed spaces create a distinctive interplay of solid mass and shadow, making the exterior a contemporary reflection of Okinawa’s architectural heritage.
