📍 Poland
Wrocław’s Ogród Zoologiczny sits beside the Oder in the city’s eastern districts, across the road from Centennial Hall. Opened in 1865, when Wrocław was the German city of Breslau, it is Poland’s oldest zoo. Historic animal houses and mature trees contrast with the contemporary Afrykarium, a complex devoted to Africa’s aquatic environments, from coral reefs to river and coastal habitats. Its underwater tunnel offers views of sharks and rays passing overhead, while large aquarium windows frame animals against blue water. The contrast between the leafy outdoor grounds, older brick architecture and immersive aquatic interiors gives photographs here several distinct settings within one institution.
