This historic site in the Latin Quarter of Paris offers a wonderful insight into the French past and present. In particular, the Observatory of the Sorbonne and its renowned astronomical research are of great interest for anyone with a scientific streak.
Located close to the Monument des Apôtres in Place du Panthéon, the Observatory of the Sorbonne has been used for research from its construction in 1667. The four white secondary domes are neoclassical, containing valuable Optic instruments as well as a large collection of brass and stone maps from centuries past. The view from the observatory reaches to the north, west and south, with great views of the Boulevard Saint-Germain and the neighboring arrondissement. The Eiffel Tower can also be seen in the distance to the west. With its stone balustrades, the top of the building is simply breathtaking. Not far away, Rue Saint-Jacques is a wonderful place to wander. Its cobbled streets are full of Parisian charm and beauty, with a host of small shops and cafes offering something for everyone. Its focal point is the Church of St. Severin, a Gothic masterpiece whose soaring spire has been part of the cityscape since the 14th century. Its golden stone façade adds to the splendor of the neighborhood.
