Oberammergau
📍 Germany
Oberammergau is a small Bavarian village nestled in the Ammergau Alps, known locally for its long‑running Passion Play tradition and a centuries‑old woodcarving industry. Architecturally it is defined by Baroque church towers with onion domes (notably St. Peter and Paul) and rows of houses whose façades are decorated with Lüftlmalerei—large, narrative frescoes that turn ordinary façades into pictorial canvases. Visually, the place pairs intricate wood sculptures, carved balconies and workshop windows with a compact main street framed by the church and the rising alpine ridgeline, creating strong foreground–background compositions; close-ups reveal carved grain and paint texture, while wide views emphasize symmetrical rooflines against the mountains. Many workshops and storefronts display life‑size figures and painted signage, making both detail and street scenes rewarding subjects. Some sites are active workshops and should be approached respectfully.
