Notre Dame de Reims is one of the most important Gothic cathedral churches in France. It stands atop a hill overlooking the city of Reims and the Marne Valley and is a symbol of unity and reconciliation as it has served as witness to many coronations and political reconciliations throughout its history. The 13th century cathedral is a masterpiece of French Gothic architecture and features beautiful stained glass windows and a spectacular rose window over the west façade. Visitors can explore the crypt featuring the tombs of Reims’ former Archbishops. It is the church of Joan of Arc, who is credited with ending the Hundred Years’ War and is celebrated with an annual Illumination of the Cathedral on the Saturday preceding Easter Sunday. The Notre Dame de Reims also houses a collection of religious art and tapestries. Be sure to take in the enchanting views of the city and its monuments from the top of the towers.
