Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral is the historic seat of Catholicism in Quebec City: the diocesan cathedral and a designated minor basilica that anchors Place d’Armes in Old Quebec. Founded as a parish in 1647, it has long been the spiritual, cultural and ceremonial heart of francophone Catholic North America, and is included in the fortified Old Québec UNESCO World Heritage area.
Its layered history—seventeenth‑century foundation, successive enlargements, and reconstruction after destructive fires—explains the building’s composite character. The exterior presents a restrained stone façade fitting the colonial streetscape, while the interior offers richly carved altars, gilded woodwork, polychrome statuary and luminous stained glass that reflect centuries of devotional art. The cathedral contains an important episcopal crypt and the tomb of early church leaders, underlining its role as an institutional memory for Quebec’s Catholic past. Uniquely, the basilica-cathedral functions as both parish church and ceremonial cathedral: it hosts major diocesan liturgies, state commemorations and cultural concerts tied to Quebec City’s calendar. Visitors note the blend of French‑colonial and 19th‑century ecclesiastical design, the intimate chapels clustered along the nave, and its prominence within the historic core of the city.
