Notre Dame de la Mer, in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, France, is the most important religious building in the centre of the ancient fishing port village. From the 11th century it was home to the cathedral and was regarded as one of the oldest examples of Romanesque architecture in France. Today, the church still stands and is the centre of the area’s national park. Whether viewed from the nearby beach or from a window on the opposite bank, the cathedral is a stunning building. Inside, visitors will find impressive stained glass windows among the decoration. The village centre is the place for cultural activities and events, such as the gypsy pilgrimage in May. The village also has several shops and restaurants to visit. Travelers can also take a boat trip around the nearby marshes, where wildlife and traditional crafts can also be enjoyed.
