Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica stands on Sussex Drive at the edge of Ottawa’s ByWard Market, opposite the National Gallery of Canada. The city’s oldest and largest church, it is the seat of Ottawa’s Roman Catholic archbishop and a prominent Gothic Revival landmark. Its pale stone façade and twin, tin-clad spires form a crisp, symmetrical silhouette, often photographed from the gallery forecourt with Louise Bourgeois’s giant spider sculpture, Maman, in the foreground. Inside, the restrained exterior gives way to richly carved woodwork, stained glass, sculpted figures, and a deep blue vaulted ceiling patterned with gold stars. As an active place of worship, the basilica is best viewed quietly and respectfully around services.
