Nordiska museet is a museum of Swedish cultural history on Djurgården, close to Stockholm’s Vasa Museum. Founded by Artur Hazelius in 1873, it explores everyday life and traditions through clothing, furnishings, textiles and other objects, with Sámi culture also represented in its collections. Its monumental Renaissance Revival building, designed by Isak Gustaf Clason and opened in 1907, resembles a palace rather than a conventional museum. Steep roofs, towers and elaborate gables create a distinctive skyline, while the long, richly detailed façade gives photographs a strong sense of symmetry and scale. Inside, the soaring central hall, lined with stone columns and arches, is dominated by a statue of King Gustav Vasa.
