Originally built in 1491 by Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solari, this red-brick tower is one of the tallest in the Moscow Kremlin. Standing 70 meters high with a ruby star at its pinnacle, it once served as a main city gateway. Its name derives from the nearby Nikola (St. Nicholas) Monastery, reflecting deep religious ties. Gazing up at its ornate spire unveils centuries of royal and military intrigue, as well as the grandeur of Russian defensive design. Although interior access is restricted, you can admire it from Red Square or join a Kremlin tour for more history. Aim for early morning to capture better photos and fewer crowds.
