
Niederwalddenkmal, or Lower Monument, is a monument on the Niederwald Peninsula in the German town of Rüdesheim am Rhein. The monument stands 57-meters high atop a hill and was commissioned in in 1883 to commemorate the German reunification. The Niederwalddenkmal was built in neo-romantic style, using a mixture of spolia or ancient stone columns taken from other monuments. It stands as a symbol of German unity and comprises of a grand stairway leading up to a grand hall with a bronze sculpture of the Germania made by Reinhold Begas. Nearby is a stone gallery and below the monument is a bronze eagle looking out towards the vineyards-studded Rhine Valley. An aerial cable car offers easy access and great views of the Rhine and the surrounding vineyards. From the monument's terrace is a view of Koblenz and the Rhine River. It is a great place to explore and visitors can also visit the Visitors Centre which houses exhibitions and a permanent exhibition about the monument's history.
