Ngorongoro Crater, near Ilturot Lorkereyan in northern Tanzania, is a vast volcanic caldera within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Its steep walls enclose grasslands, marshes, acacia woodland and the shallow soda waters of Lake Magadi, creating a compact mosaic of habitats. Large concentrations of wildlife, including wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, lions and critically endangered black rhinoceroses, inhabit the crater floor. From the forested rim, the basin appears almost map-like; below, photographs gain scale from animals crossing open plains beneath the dark escarpment. Morning mist can soften the rim, while the lake and wetlands introduce pale reflections and shifting bands of color.
