📍 From Inside, United States
The New York State Capitol crowns Albany’s Capitol Hill, at the northern end of Empire State Plaza, and houses the state legislature. Completed in 1899 after more than three decades of construction, it combines Romanesque and Renaissance influences rather than the domed classical design associated with many American capitols. Its granite exterior, steep roofs, towers, and elaborate dormers create a richly layered silhouette, especially in views looking uphill along State Street. Inside, the monumental Great Western Staircase—known as the “Million Dollar Staircase”—features intricate sandstone carving, including portraits of historical figures among foliage and ornamental details. The building’s dense nineteenth-century craftsmanship contrasts sharply with the monumental modernist architecture of the adjoining plaza.
