Munich’s New Town Hall occupies the north side of Marienplatz, the central square of the historic old town, and remains the seat of the mayor and city council. Designed by Georg von Hauberrisser and built between 1867 and 1909, its elaborate Gothic Revival architecture can easily appear centuries older. The richly carved façade, steep roofs, arcades and 85-metre tower create one of Munich’s most recognizable urban scenes. Set high in the tower, the Rathaus-Glockenspiel uses life-size figures to depict a tournament celebrating the marriage of Duke Wilhelm V and Renata of Lorraine, followed by the traditional Schäfflertanz. From across Marienplatz, the building’s long façade and central tower form a balanced composition, while closer views reveal statues, tracery, gargoyles and contrasting stone textures.
