Neuschwanstein Castle lies in the small Bavarian village of Schwangau in Germany. Built in the 19th century for King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Neuschwanstein was intended to be a retreat for the king and have the appearance of a medieval knights castle. The castle’s breathtaking towers and spires, highlighted with intricate designs and diverse architectural styles, give it an ethereal feel. After the king’s death in 1886, the castle was opened to the public as an interesting tourist destination. The castle is particularly picturesque when viewed from Mary’s Bridge and local hiking paths with stunning views of the castle’s turrets and spires. Neuschwanstein offers an up-close look at the interior of the castle, where much of the 19th-century decor is still on display. Visitors can learn more about King Ludwig’s presence there, as guided tours throughout the castle are available in multiple languages. Getting to the castle is easy via train, bus, or car all the way up to the castle gates.
