Nesjavellir
📍 Iceland
Nesjavellir is a high-temperature geothermal area in the Hengill volcanic system, northwest of Selfoss and close to Lake Þingvallavatn. Its power station uses underground heat to generate electricity and hot water for the Reykjavík region, making the site a striking expression of Iceland’s geothermal landscape and energy infrastructure. White steam plumes, long pipelines and angular industrial buildings contrast with dark volcanic ground, moss-covered slopes and, in winter, broad fields of snow. The most recognizable images place the engineered lines against the open highland terrain, where shifting cloud and low light can emphasize both the scale of the installation and the raw geology beneath it.
