📍 From Inside, United States
The National Museum of the American Indian is a Smithsonian museum on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., close to the U.S. Capitol. Its exhibitions explore the histories, arts and contemporary lives of Indigenous peoples across the Americas, presenting Native communities as living cultures rather than subjects confined to the past. The building’s sweeping curves and warm limestone exterior evoke rock shaped by wind and water, contrasting with the Mall’s more formal, straight-edged architecture. Landscaped wetlands, meadow, woodland and cropland connect the grounds to Indigenous relationships with land. Layered stone, recessed windows and overlapping curves give the exterior its recognizable texture, with shadows emphasizing the depth and movement of the walls.
