The National Monument of Scotland, located on Calton Hill in Edinburgh, is a striking but incomplete tribute to Scottish soldiers and sailors who died in the Napoleonic Wars. Often referred to as "Scotland's Disgrace" or "Edinburgh's Folly," the monument was intended to be a replica of the Parthenon in Athens, symbolizing Scotland's cultural and intellectual aspirations. Construction began in 1826, driven by the architectural vision of Charles Robert Cockerell and William Henry Playfair, two prominent figures in the neoclassical architectural movement. However, the project ran out of funds by 1829, leaving only twelve columns standing.

Despite its unfinished state, the monument is an iconic symbol of Edinburgh and offers panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscapes. Its location on Calton Hill makes it a popular spot for tourists and locals alike, especially during events like the Beltane Fire Festival, which celebrates the arrival of summer with vibrant performances. Visitors can easily access the monument by foot, and the site is part of the city's UNESCO World Heritage designation, reflecting its cultural and historical significance.
