Nao Victoria
📍 Spain
Moored on the Guadalquivir near the Torre del Oro, Seville’s Nao Victoria is a replica of the ship that completed the first circumnavigation of the globe in 1522. The expedition departed from Seville in 1519 under Ferdinand Magellan; after his death, Juan Sebastián Elcano brought the Victoria back to Spain, the only vessel of the original five to complete the voyage. The replica gives tangible scale to that journey: its compact wooden hull, raised stern and dense web of rigging contrast with the immense distances covered by the original crew. Seen from the riverbank, the ship’s masts and spars stand against the open river and the buildings of Triana across the water, connecting a recognizable Sevillian scene with the city’s history of oceanic exploration and trade.
