Nancy, in northeastern France, is the former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine, with a cityscape shaped by ducal patronage and Art Nouveau. Its centerpiece is Place Stanislas, an 18th-century square commissioned by Stanislas Leszczyński, the former king of Poland who became Duke of Lorraine. Pale stone façades, elaborate gilded ironwork and monumental fountains create a distinctive contrast of restrained architecture and ornate detail, while the Hôtel de Ville anchors the square’s symmetrical composition. Nearby, Place de la Carrière extends a long urban perspective toward the Palais du Gouvernement. The older town preserves a different scale, with narrow streets, the Ducal Palace and the twin towers of the medieval Porte de la Craffe. Nancy’s later creative identity is embodied by the École de Nancy, whose Art Nouveau glass, furniture and decorative arts translate plants and other natural forms into flowing lines.
