📍 From Nagarjuna Sagar Old Bridge, India
Nagarjuna Sagar Dam spans the Krishna River beside Vijayapuri North, on the Telangana side of the border with Andhra Pradesh. Built for irrigation and hydroelectric power, its immense masonry wall and repeated spillway gates give this river landscape a distinctive engineered geometry. The broad reservoir above contrasts with the downstream river channel, while releases through the gates turn the dam’s orderly facade into a curtain of white water and spray. The reservoir also reshaped a landscape rich in Buddhist history: archaeological finds from the submerged valley are preserved at the museum on Nagarjunakonda island. Together, the dam and reservoir connect modern water engineering with the region’s much older cultural heritage.
