📍 From Gudvangen gjestebrygge, Norway
Nærøyfjorden is a narrow arm of the Sognefjord system, with the village of Gudvangen at its innermost end. Carved by glaciers and flooded by seawater, the fjord forms part of the UNESCO-listed West Norwegian Fjords, alongside Geirangerfjord. Its steep mountain walls compress the view into a striking corridor of water, rock and wooded slopes, with waterfalls descending toward the shore. Small farms and settlements occupy pockets of usable land beneath the cliffs, revealing the scale of the landscape and the constraints that have shaped life here. From Gudvangen, the receding mountain walls frame the view down the fjord; passing boats offer a clear sense of proportion, while calm water can mirror the slopes and low cloud can obscure their upper reaches.
