📍 Bulgaria
The National Ethnographic Museum occupies part of Sofia’s former Royal Palace on Knyaz Alexander I Square, sharing the historic building with the National Gallery. Its collections explore Bulgarian everyday life and regional identity through traditional costumes, embroidery, jewelry, carpets, woodcarving, ceramics, farming tools, household objects, and ritual artifacts. The palace itself adds another layer of history: adapted as a royal residence after Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule, it presents an ornate late-19th-century façade that contrasts with the intimate, handmade textures inside. Displays of patterned textiles and finely worked metal ornaments offer especially rich visual detail, while the museum’s central location places Bulgarian folk culture within the civic and architectural heart of the capital.
