The Museum of San Colombano – Tagliavini Collection is a specialized musical museum housed within the complex of San Colombano in Bologna. It preserves one of Italy’s most significant private assemblages of historical musical instruments, manuscripts, iconography and related archival material, emphasizing Italian keyboard, plucked and bowed instruments from the Baroque through the 19th century. Its importance lies in the combination of original instruments—many restored to playable condition—and documentary resources that illuminate performance practice, instrument-making techniques and regional musical life.
Located in a medieval ecclesiastical setting whose origins date to early medieval Bologna, the museum benefits from the intimate, resonant rooms of the former convent and church annexes; the original architecture provides an evocative context for hearing and viewing instruments in an environment close to their historical use. Exhibits include harpsichords, spinets, fortepianos, viols and lutes alongside iconographic panels, original scores and restoration dossiers. As a distinct feature, the Tagliavini Collection regularly supports live demonstrations, scholarly study and conservation projects, and its holdings are often used for historically informed performances and recordings, making it both a research resource and a living museum for enthusiasts of early music.
