The Museo Gypsotheca Antonio Canova in Possagno, in the Veneto foothills of Monte Grappa, preserves the plaster models of the Neoclassical sculptor in his birthplace. These works reveal the full-scale forms behind many of his marble sculptures, bringing the process of shaping idealized bodies, flowing drapery, and mythological scenes into view. The museum complex includes Canova’s birth house, linking his international career to this small town. Its architecture offers two distinct settings: a nineteenth-century gallery filled with pale sculptural figures and a modern extension designed by Carlo Scarpa. In Scarpa’s rooms, carefully positioned windows draw daylight across the plaster surfaces, making contours and shadows central to the experience. The contrast between white figures, spare walls, and sharply framed light gives photographs a strong sense of both volume and stillness.
