Museu Nacional da República
📍 Brazil
The Museu Nacional da República, officially named Museu Nacional Honestino Guimarães, stands in Brasília’s Cultural Complex of the Republic beside the National Library, near the Cathedral and the eastern end of the Monumental Axis. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated in 2006, the museum is a stark white hemispherical structure reached by sweeping external ramps, an expression of the bold geometry that defines Brazil’s planned capital. Its galleries host changing exhibitions rather than a fixed historical display. From the surrounding plaza, the dome, elevated walkway and curved shadows form clean, graphic compositions, while the neighboring civic monuments provide a broader view of Brasília’s monumental modernist landscape.
