The Museo del Prado is Spain’s national art museum on Madrid’s central Paseo del Prado, housed in a neoclassical building designed by Juan de Villanueva. Its collection is anchored by Spanish masters—Velázquez, Goya and El Greco—alongside Bosch and Italian and Flemish old masters, which makes the galleries a concentrated visual history of European painting. Architecturally the exterior presents a balanced, columned limestone façade and formal symmetry that photographs well from the wide boulevard; the museum’s scale and repetitive window rhythm give a sense of civic gravity. Inside, dense rooms of canonical canvases create intimate viewing compositions—Las Meninas and Goya’s works are the recognisable focal points for many images. Note that the museum sits adjacent to the green sweep of El Retiro, providing a leafy foreground for exterior shots.
