📍 From Muriwai Gannet Colony, New Zealand
Muriwai Beach stretches along Auckland’s rugged west coast, where the Tasman Sea meets a broad sweep of iron-rich black sand. Powerful surf, wind-shaped dunes and dark cliffs give the shoreline a distinctly raw character, while wet sand often mirrors the sky between receding waves. At the beach’s southern end, the headland around Ōtakamiro Point is known for its mainland colony of Australasian gannets, whose white plumage stands out against the rock and ocean. The elevated coastal landscape reveals the scale of the beach especially clearly: surf lines run toward the horizon, sea spray softens distant details, and low light brings out ripples, footprints and reflective textures in the sand.
