Murallas de Campeche
📍 Mexico
The Murallas de Campeche are the surviving fortifications that once enclosed the colonial port of San Francisco de Campeche, protecting it from pirate attacks in the Gulf of Mexico. Built around a polygonal old town, the defensive system included thick walls, bastions and gateways such as Puerta de Tierra and Puerta de Mar. Although sections were later demolished, the remaining ramparts still define the historic center, part of Campeche’s UNESCO-listed fortified town. Their weathered masonry, angular bastions and contrast with rows of pastel façades create the city’s most recognizable visual narrative, especially where elevated stretches reveal rooftops, church towers and the grid of streets within the former enclosure.
