Muralha de Óbidos
📍 Portugal
The Muralha de Óbidos is the medieval defensive circuit enclosing the hilltop historic center of Óbidos, in Portugal’s Oeste region. Its stone walls, towers and gateways trace the town’s compact outline and join the castle at its northern end. The fortifications were developed over centuries, including after the town’s conquest by Portugal’s first king, Afonso Henriques, in 1148. From elevated stretches, the walls reveal a dense patchwork of whitewashed houses, terracotta roofs and narrow streets, set against the open countryside beyond. Their rough masonry creates a strong visual contrast with the town’s white façades and colored trim. Inside Porta da Vila, the main gateway, blue-and-white azulejos depicting religious scenes add a decorative layer to the defensive architecture.
