Centrally located in Richmond, the Murakami House is an iconic example of Japanese Canadian history in the region. Built in 1941 by Katsuzo Murakami, the house has become a symbol of the resilience, identity and hopeful futures of the local Japanese Canadian community. The house is a modest WWII-era home lovingly restored in the 1990’s. Visit the house to gain insight into the history and culture of the vibrant Japanese Canadian community in Richmond. During your visit, tour the house itself and explore the Murakami Garden with its tranquil stone pathways, and educational exhibits. The house also contains a thriving Murakami Community Centre which is devoted to promoting knowledge, understanding and dialogue of the history, culture and experience of Japanese Canadians in the region.
