Mühlhausen is a historic town on the Unstrut in northwestern Thuringia, shaped by its centuries as a Free Imperial City. Its compact old town retains substantial medieval fortifications, stone gateways, half-timbered houses and an unusually church-rich skyline. The five towers of the Gothic St Mary’s Church dominate many views; the church is closely associated with radical preacher Thomas Müntzer and the German Peasants’ War. Johann Sebastian Bach also worked in Mühlhausen as organist at Divi Blasii, whose restrained Gothic interior reflects the town’s strong musical heritage. From the preserved city wall and surrounding lanes, photographs can layer weathered masonry, red roofs and church spires, while the market squares offer broader compositions of civic façades and everyday street life.
