Vakil Mosque stands in the historic center of Shiraz, beside the Vakil Bazaar and bathhouse, forming part of the civic ensemble commissioned by Karim Khan Zand in the eighteenth century. Its spacious courtyard is framed by arcades and two monumental iwans, the vaulted portals that give the façades their scale and emphasis. The southern prayer hall is distinguished by 48 stone columns carved with spiraling grooves; their repeated forms beneath the vaulted ceiling create a strong rhythm and depth in photographs. Floral tilework brings vivid color to the entrances and courtyard elevations, contrasting with the restrained stone surfaces of the interior. Outside, the long rectangular pool provides a central axis through the courtyard, linking the tiled architecture with reflections of the sky.
