📍 From Inside, Iran
Imam Khomeini Mosque, formerly known as the Shah Mosque, stands beside Tehran’s Grand Bazaar, south of Golestan Palace. Commissioned by Fath-Ali Shah in the early 19th century, it is a major example of Qajar religious architecture and part of the historic relationship between the bazaar and the city’s religious life. Its spacious courtyard follows the traditional four-iwan plan, with large vaulted portals arranged around a central pool and leading into prayer spaces. Blue and yellow tilework, floral patterns, and calligraphic bands give the façades their distinctive color and texture, while minarets and a clock tower punctuate the complex. The courtyard’s balanced arrangement contrasts with the dense lanes and covered passages of the surrounding market, making the mosque’s scale and architectural order especially legible.
