Mount Sunday is an isolated rocky hill rising from the broad tussock plains of the upper Rangitata Valley, within the Ashburton Lakes–Hakatere landscape of inland Canterbury. Its open summit looks across braided river channels, high-country stations and the peaks of the Southern Alps, giving the small hill an unexpectedly commanding scale in photographs. It is widely recognized as the filming location for Edoras in The Lord of the Rings trilogy; the set was removed after filming, leaving the natural ridgeline and sweeping valley intact. A walking track leads to the summit, with little shelter from the valley’s changeable weather.
