The Mount Nelson Hotel is a historic luxury retreat on Orange Street in Cape Town’s Gardens district, between the city centre and the slopes of Table Mountain. Opened in 1899, it became closely associated with travelers arriving on the Union-Castle shipping route. Its distinctive pink exterior was introduced in 1918 as a symbol of peace after the First World War and remains one of the city’s most recognizable architectural colors. A palm-lined driveway, white-trimmed façades, columned verandas and lush gardens create strong symmetry and layered views, while changing light brings out tones from pale blush to deep salmon. Known locally as “the Nellie,” the hotel is also associated with Cape Town’s long-standing afternoon-tea tradition.
