Mount Meru rises immediately north of Arusha within Arusha National Park, reaching 4,566 metres as Tanzania’s second-highest mountain. This volcanic massif is distinguished by a vast, breached crater whose steep inner walls surround a prominent ash cone, while its lower slopes transition through forest and heath to exposed alpine terrain. From Arusha, Meru forms a broad, often cloud-framed backdrop; higher on the mountain, the narrow crater rim reveals dramatic contrasts of dark volcanic rock, green slopes and, in clear conditions, distant Mount Kilimanjaro. The mountain also anchors the landscape associated with the Meru people. Summit treks take several days and are conducted with an armed park ranger because wildlife, including buffalo and giraffes, inhabits the lower routes.
