Moulin de la Galette is a historic windmill landmark on Rue Lepic in Montmartre, in Paris’s 18th arrondissement. It recalls the period when the hill was dotted with mills that processed grain and other materials; the name later became associated with a popular dance hall and guinguette. That lively social scene was immortalized in Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s 1876 painting Bal du moulin de la Galette and also attracted artists including Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. Today the mill’s dark wooden sails, raised above the restaurant and tightly packed rooftops, create one of Montmartre’s most recognizable silhouettes. From the street, its weathered structure contrasts with pale façades, greenery, and the steep urban slope.
