📍 New Zealand
Motunau Beach is a small coastal settlement at the mouth of the Motunau River in North Canterbury, where a sheltered estuary meets the open Pacific. Its shingle shoreline, low coastal cliffs and modest fishing baches give the scene a distinctly rural character. Offshore, the low profile of Motunau Island forms the beach’s most recognizable landmark; the protected island is an important breeding refuge for seabirds. Photographs from the river mouth can layer calm water, gravel bars and the island against the wider horizon, while changing tides continually redraw the channels and reflections.
