📍 From Courtyard, Egypt
The Mosque of Ibn Tulun stands in Cairo’s Sayyida Zeinab district, on the historic hill of Gebel Yashkur. Commissioned by Ahmad ibn Tulun and completed in the ninth century, it is one of Egypt’s oldest surviving mosques and preserves the monumental character of early Islamic architecture. Its vast square courtyard is framed by deep arcades of brick piers and pointed arches, with restrained stucco ornament that reflects Abbasid influences associated with Samarra. The mosque’s most recognizable feature is its unusual spiral minaret, while the surrounding enclosure creates a striking sense of separation from the dense city. Repeating arches, long shadow lines, warm masonry textures, and the centered courtyard fountain give photographs strong rhythm and scale. Visitors should dress respectfully and remove shoes before entering prayer areas.
