The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is one of the most beautiful and impressive monuments in Cairo, Egypt. It was built in 1356 as a religious school and mosque and is considered one of the most important Mamluk architectural complexes. Located in the district of El Khokh in Cairo, it was the first mosque to incorporate both the madrassa (Islamic school) and the mausoleum of its patron in the same structure. The imposing brick walls make up the entire complex, punctuated by 11 beautiful arched domes and decorated with intricate Islamic calligraphy and stucco carvings. There are four minarets, two of which were added in the 18th century. The massive double-arched iwan (grand entrance) is especially splendid, as is the ornate prayer room. The expansive courtyard can accommodate up to 4,000 worshippers. The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan remains an impressive sight, reflecting both traditional Mamluk architecture and Islamic religious heritage.
