Morro Rock is a large volcanic plug located in picturesque Morro Bay, California. It stands at an elevation of 576 ft and was formed when molten lava cooled within the vent of an inactive volcano 22 to 23 million years ago. Morro Rock is protected by law, making it illegal to climb or take away from the entrance. A small island just off the coast at Morro Rock is a protected seabird colony and an important area of ecological preservation. The beauty of Morro Rock can be enjoyed from nearby beaches and parks, as well as from sightseeing cruises around Morro Bay. Nature lovers can explore the protected State Park to find various wildlife, hiking trails and views over the bay. Morro Rock is also a popular spot for surfers, fishermen and whale watchers.
