📍 Brazil
Morichales de Balbina are palm-dominated wetlands in the Balbina area of Presidente Figueiredo, in Brazil’s Amazonas state. The name refers to stands of moriche, known locally as buriti, a palm adapted to saturated ground and shallow water. These wetlands form a distinctive Amazonian scene: tall, narrow trunks rise above dark water, while broad fan-shaped crowns break the surrounding forest canopy. Reflections and the repeating vertical lines of the palms give photographs a strong sense of rhythm and depth. Buriti also has long-standing local importance, with its fruit and fibers used by communities across the Amazon.
