Monument Valley straddles the Arizona–Utah border within the Navajo Nation, where sandstone buttes and mesas rise above the desert floor of the Colorado Plateau. Near Oljato, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park contains the East and West Mitten Buttes, recognizable by their thumb-like spires, and the broad mass of Merrick Butte. These formations are remnants of rock layers worn away by erosion, with iron oxides giving the sandstone its red-orange color. Western films helped turn this landscape into an international symbol of the American West, but it remains a living Diné (Navajo) homeland. From the tribal park’s main overlook, the three buttes stand across a sparsely vegetated plain; their separation, visible horizontal layers and shifting shadows reveal both the immense scale and the sculptural detail of the rock.
