Monument Valley is a natural sandstone formation located in the desert of Oljato-Monument Valley, Arizona and is famously known for its roles and appearances in many westerns and commercials. The scenery is an iconic representation of the American Southwest and is believed to be over 1000 million years old. The rich landscape of buttes, mesas and spires can be best explored and admired during a self-guided tour of the 2 hour 17-mile scenic road that travels through the valley, offering spectacular views of these famous formations and the breathtaking Arizona desert. Along the way, you can stop at viewpoints for a glimpse of the stunning landscape. Horseshoe Bend and the Mittens formations are just two of the many sites you can see up close, perfect for snapping photos. There is also a 17-mile dirt road that leads to the valley, allowing you to have an off-the-beaten-path experience and even more opportunities to experience Monument Valley.
