📍 Greece
The Monument to the Unknown Soldier is a national war memorial set into the forecourt of the Hellenic Parliament, facing Syntagma Square in central Athens. Its restrained limestone composition centers on a low relief of a fallen hoplite, while inscriptions and battle names commemorate Greeks who died in military service. The site is guarded by the Evzones of the Presidential Guard, recognizable by their traditional uniforms and precisely choreographed movements; a guard change takes place each hour, with a larger ceremonial change on Sunday morning. The broad steps, pale stone, balanced façade and contrast between the motionless sentries and the busy square create the monument’s defining visual tension. Visitors should remain behind the marked boundary and follow guards’ instructions during ceremonies.
