📍 From Plaça de Carles Buïgas, Spain
The Palau Nacional stands on the slopes of Montjuïc above Plaça d’Espanya, forming one of Barcelona’s most recognizable monumental backdrops. Built for the 1929 International Exhibition, it now houses the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), whose collections trace Catalan art from medieval church decoration to modern painting and sculpture. Its Romanesque murals, transferred from churches in the Catalan Pyrenees, are a particularly important part of the museum’s identity. Outside, the palace’s central dome, flanking towers and richly ornamented façade crown a formal sequence of terraces, stairways and fountains. Viewed uphill from Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina, this arrangement emphasizes the building’s symmetry and scale, with the Venetian Towers framing the approach. From the palace terraces, the perspective reverses, opening across Plaça d’Espanya toward Barcelona’s dense urban skyline.
