📍 From Inside, Spain
A monumental palace crowning Barcelona’s Montjuïc hill, the Montjuïc National Palace was erected for the 1929 International Exposition and today houses the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC). Its importance lies in both its architecture — a grand, neo-Baroque composition with a dominant central dome, broad stone façades, monumental staircases and terraces — and its cultural role as the principal repository of Catalan visual heritage, from Romanesque frescoes and Gothic altarpieces to Modernisme and 19th–20th century painting and decorative arts.
Built as an exhibition palace, its formal symmetry, colonnaded loggias and richly decorated interiors were designed to impress visitors and frame panoramic views over the city. Inside, sweeping galleries and a vast main hall display landmark collections (notably one of the finest Romanesque mural ensembles in Europe), temporary shows and restored period rooms. Unique local features: the palace anchors the cascade of terraces that descend to the Magic Fountain and Plaça d’Espanya, making its illuminated façade and surrounding fountains a focal point of seasonal light-and-music events and an integral part of Montjuïc’s cultural landscape.
