Montecosaro is a hill town in the Marche region, in the province of Macerata, overlooking the lower Chienti valley between the Sibillini Mountains and the Adriatic coast. Its historic center, distinct from the modern settlement of Montecosaro Scalo below, is shaped by narrow lanes, brick façades, gateways and compact rows of tiled roofs. Elevated streets and terraces open onto a broad agricultural landscape, giving photographs a strong contrast between the tightly built medieval core and the surrounding fields. At Montecosaro Scalo, the Romanesque church of Santa Maria a Piè di Chienti adds an important architectural landmark, noted for its imposing brick exterior and unusual two-level interior.
