Monte Epomeo is the highest point on Ischia, rising to about 790 metres above the island in the Gulf of Naples. Rather than a classic volcanic cone, it is an uplifted mass of pale green tuff, reflecting the complex geology that shaped Ischia. Near the summit, the small hermitage and Church of San Nicola are partly carved into the rock, adding a human scale to the weathered stone. The exposed crest opens broad views across Ischia’s towns, wooded slopes and deeply cut coastline; in clear conditions, Procida, Capri, Vesuvius and the mainland frame the horizon. Rough tuff textures, low scrub and sweeping sea light give summit photographs a distinctly austere character.
